The US has everything to do with the terrorist's hate.
Osama bin Laden has been telling the USA for twelve years to get the US troops out of Saudi Arabia. He has been making it clear to us for twelve years that the US troops must go.
Starting with the first WTC bombing, then the bombing of the US embassies in Africa, the the attack on a US warship, Osama has been using increasingly greater force to get our attention. 9/11 was just a further escalation of the jihad, or holy war, which he declared against the USA twelve years ago.
The Islamic view is that every square inch of Saudi Arabia is holy ground, and the presence of even one infidel, let alone thousands of infidel troops, is a sacrilege and desecration. That's why most of the terrorists that were caught are Saudis.
They did not make the choice to hate. Their fanatical religion gives them no choice but to destroy us all or be destroyed. We, on the other hand do have a choice other than trying to kill them all. We could make the choice to withdraw our troops from Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries and stop propping up corrupt authoritarian dictatorships like the ones in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, etc.
If we took those simple measures, and let the Arabs work things out among themselves, all the terrorist threats would disappear overnight. People do not fly airplanes into buildings and commit suicide bombings for no reason. If we remove the reasons for their hatred, their hatred will also disappear, along with the consequences of their hatred -- the prospect of terrorism which has everyone in this country scared shitless right now.
They do not want to commit suicide. In there world view they have no other choice. And we will not give it to them.
