TOKYO -- You may not remember the battle between VHS and beta or between cassette tapes and CD's but in years to come, you'll likely be able to recall a battle over the format for the next generation of DVDs.

So far, the front runner is Toshiba. It has gotten support from four Hollywood studios for a DVD format which is to be used starting late next year. There's a rival technology called Blu-ray disc. Both formats promise that the discs will be able to hold more material and that the new DVDs will have the kind of resolution that would make it suitable for high-definition televisions.

But we won't know until later which format will end up dominating the market.
