You really need to get a written copy of the rules! You are right, some comps do NOT allow any pre-work on tips, etc. The main difference between a comp nail and salon nail is thickness and length. A comp nail is as thin as possible, with no regards to whether it will break or not... a salon nail needs to be able to hold up for 2 weeks of normal wear and tear. A comp nail is also usually the longest that will look good on the models hand and nail bed... while a salon nail just won't be that long! Opt for no more than 50 to 100% extension on the salon nail comp.... In real life I wouldn't allow more than 50%... but even for a salon nail comp there is going to be some flexibility I'd assume, and the nail does need to photograph well still as well. So that does mean that good, deep smile lines will be important... as they can make the nail bed look longer, which always looks nicer. AS with any comp, consistency is key! Whatever choices you opt for, do it exactly the same on all 10 nails, and check the nails from every angle.... You must get a copy of those rules in writing ASAP though!
