Hi!

My brother-in-law and myself are also big fans of Montreal smoked meat, and have several times tried to re-create it at home. It will never be exactly the same because the real stuff cold smokes for weeks in a smokehouse. Several attempts were pitiful, but the best tasting one we tried used a combination of a dry rub and an injected cure, with the first rub being rinsed off and a different one applied just before smoking. I'll try to dig it up for you if you're interested.
