Suzie, It takes a special teacher to teach students with dyslexia. The first thing a teacher has to have is a heart that cares and understanding they are very much needed. I do have a theory that may help you in your teaching. Remember when we were in elementary school and how teachers made it fun to learn. For example and always keeping it simple, Bobby had 16 apples and 3 of them wasn't any good; How many apple Bobby had that were good? This same stratgy applies for algebra, you may have to go as far as having the 16 apples to let them demostrate for you hands on what the answer maybe. What I'm saying to you is always give them meaning when teaching them how to solve a problem. Let them know why. Even with reading, teach them to point out person, place or thing to enable them to comprehend what a sentence is actually saying or asking. Just try these methods and see if they can work for you and your students. If you see progress please pass this information to other teachers who cares.
