Don't give up on your kids. I have a girl 17 and a boy 13 that are dyslexic, she more than my son. Make the school system listen to you, you know your kids better than they do. The school has put them in 504 program with extra timing for test and less words in spelling, and alot of tutoring. Use colors to remember math problems, and in any other school work, culculators to correct your mistakes. The system tried to talk me into giving my son drugs and I refused. Every year I worry if my son will be promoted to the next grade. It is hard, I am happy to say he made it to 9th grade with b's and c's.In third grade my daughters teacher told me she was dyslexic and said that she and others like her will never graduate. That made me so mad, that I read everything there is to know about it. And made it my mission for her to graduate. In fourth, fith, 6th and 7th she was an honor b studen. It got a little hard in 8th, 9th,10th,11th but her grades stayed at b's and c's. Now her last year of high school she has enough credit to graduate in 2005.She has droped all of the extra help, except for extra time for test.I have to say, it all depends on what kind of teacher your child gets every year. I have always sheduled a teacher's meeting in the first week of school. And tell the teacher what they need to know about my childs needs and keep in touch with the teacher all year long.
And tell your kids that dyslexic childern are smart kids. They just work differendly....I hope this helps..
