I was rather surprised that Terry came without a fuss, as it was the crack of dawn, but it made it a lot easier. We sat in the mess hall: I was eating porridge lustily, but Terry had hardly touched his - he was merely stirring it around his bowl. I didn't press him; I knew how he felt, and that eating would be the least of his worries once he got to school. And me, escorted by my brother. Why did our parents have to be so useless? I sighed, and stood up straight, determined not to give the sergeant any reason to despise me.
"Yes, sah!"
He opened the door, and I walked quietly in, unsure of what to do now that Phil had gone. We had to leave our parents/brothers outside, for the first-years were starting an hour earlier than everyone else. I chose a desk near the back of the classroom, and sat down, trembling.
