“Where is that slave!” Oiltongue bellowed furiously as he looked about the captains staying at Redwall with him. His most suspected slave had gone missing and he wanted to know why. “I told you all to keep an eye on her and where did that get me! A valuable source of information lost. You blundering buffoons! Can you scruffy pawed addle-brained fools keep track of just one hare! I should throw you to the pike just let loose in the pond. Fortunatly for you, I need all paws on deck to find that slave!” Oiltongue’s captains shuddered as the warlord poured out his wrath upon them. Hurrying away the called their patrols and set out to find that slave. Knowing that the next time this happened, Oiltongue would not be so merciful, the captain of the guard stationed all his troops around the slave pens. What they didn’t know was that the slaves at Redwall were not of any use to the rebels. They first were going to rescue the former leaders of the areas they came from. After all, what was a snake without its head?

Long Patrol General Tymain Shortbow sat at the kitchen table with the other escaped slaves. The harsh life had taken their toll on the fighting hare. Her cheeks were sunken and the hollows under here eyes betrayed that she was accustomed to hard labor. One only needed to look in her eyes to see the fire burning to keep fighting. “So” she asked, her voice hollow with hunger. “What is your plan?”

Roseapple slid a bowl of light vegetable broth towards the hare. “The plan will not work without you. We are to gather the chieftains form their enslavements and then free the warlike. After we are all fit, we march upon Redwall!”
“Count me in.”

As the seasons progressed, the warlord and his minions grew increasingly frustrated with the rebels. Former chieftains were being liberated and nobody could discover by whom and where they were hiding. Among the slaves there was new hope. Many squirrels began talking about the prophecy in which a squirrel of the Hemlocks line would free them. This soon passed to all of the compounds and species and it was rumored that a squirrel was helping the chieftains escape. The slaves would talk at night around the light of a single candle, talking of hope that the rebels would come to liberate them. Roseapple and the others had many loyal followers thrust into the dungons and cellars of the various strongholds thoughout the countryside. Amazingly, those were rescued, and their chains found in a pile with a leaf on top of it. A hemlock leaf to be precise.
