Before he could stop her, the impulsive squirrelmaid darted into the pirate's midst, tempted by the goodies. "Oh, no." The badger hung his head. "Now she's done it."
The corsairs were startled as the squirrel appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. But they soon got over it. One particularly nasty-looking mink stood up and grabbed her collar. "I claim this young rip as an oarslave for the Bulltrout, an' if anyone says different, they're gonna have to meet wid my cutlass! The other captains stayed silent. Drenj's cruelty and prowess with a blade made them hesitant. A young, female fox, one of Drenj's crew, bit her bottom lip at the sight. "I--I'll challenge you."
Chess stood in the shadows, aghast. How would that slip of a beast overcome the stocky captain? Why, she didn't look much older then Ashlyn! Thoughts tumbled round and round in his head as he watched.
The foxmaid gulped. There was no backing down now. She drew her scimitar and they circled in the "arena" cleared by the crewbeasts. Drenj slashed down toward her side and she tried to spin out of the way, but it found its mark and her side bled. Cold chills ran down her back, and her apprehensin showed as she raised her blade and cut it down in a sweeping arc toward where the mink's neck joined his shoulder.
