Mossyra watched the wind blow snow across the grate that was the only entrance or exit to her cell. Cold began to seep in and she stepped back as a wildcat sentry padded by, intent on his duty. Three seasons ago she had been captured in a raid on her woodland settlement, still a babe and unable to fight. Now, she was the only one still alive.
Winter's end was approaching and she would soon be sent back to the fields to labor with other slaves under a a merciless sun in an uncaring place.
The ruler, King Cruelclaw Stripetail, was devoid of any pity for the wretched creatures he captured. The only creature he loved was his daughter, Silkfur Stripetail.
It was often said that fate was a strange thing, and Mossyra's life was no exception. Her parents and friends had been killed but she was spared and now lived a life as a slave to a wildcat king. By chance alone she fell into favor with the king's daughter and became good friends with Silkfur even before learning who she was. The delighted princess had told her father about the hapiness she felt from being friends with the captive squirrel and the king allowed the friendship to continue. He even contributed to the happiness of his daughter by letting Mossyra live in the palace and have no work.
Then, in a cruel twist of fate, the princess fell ill. Hoping to better his daughters health, the king had taken her to the sunny land of Mossflower. While there, the princess had vanished. No trace of her was found and it was obvious that she would never run away without telling or being with her beloved friend, Mossyra. A search had been made, but Silkfur was not found. The king had returned full of grief and left the control of his castle to his captains while he mourned his loss of the only thing he had ever loved and wanted.
As is often the case with warlords, he forgot about his daughter's companion and she had been put in harsh labor once more. Fortunately, she was stronger now and could easily cope with the tasks set for her.
A scraping sound caused her to look up and she had just enough time to see a cloak billowing in the wind as a shadowy form dropped into her cell. Then the world went black and she fell into the midst of unconsciousness.
A strange mouse with a beautiful sword and gleaming armor visited her dreams. His voice was like that of freedom and he said: "Mossyra, you are destined to be a great warrior. Take your place in the world and follow in the footsteps of your ancestor, my friend Lady Amber.
