The last snow came and went with peace. Spring was here. The woodlanders from the large fort of Tumbledale began searching for early plants and sowing the ground with seeds. Life was good in the middle of the vast Mossflower woods, where no vermin ever tred.

But evil was coming.
Far from the happiness of Tumbledale, far from the land of Mossflower, in a land so far south that not even beasts from Southsward had seen it, evil was on the move.

Soretooth Bloodclaw was looking for conquest. The once-rich land his ancestors had taken was failing, and he knew it. So, gathering his slaves and his ruthless army, he set off in a thousand ships to conquer the lands to the north.
His army endured many hardships, and he was gentle with them. But the slaves fared far worse. Cold ate past their torn rags, disease struck again and again, many were washed overboard in storms because they had no cover. Then the warmth came again. Things were becoming better for the ships, but food was running low. Already starving slaves had more of their pitiful store of food taken away to feed the mighty army. But they wept when land was sighted for it meant suffering for other creatures. Unknowingly, they had sailed past Salamandastron and straight to the part of Mossflower that was far to the north. It had taken them a full year to travel from their land and up to Mossflower's shore.

But evil was coming.
Far from the ruthless army, far from the peaceful place of Tumbledale, far from the celebrating place called Redwall, far from even the lonely stones of what was once Loamhedge, long before Soretooth Bloodclaw set off to conquer, so far across the land it touched another ocean, evil was on the move.

Blackfang Redclaw was looking for conquest. His army was traveling across forest, field, vale, dale, desert, abyss, and mountain to find a large area where they could hold sway. Many slaves accompanied the cruel leader and his army on their journey, weeping for whomever stood in his path. For though he was kind with his followers, slaves recieved no mercy. If you fell, you were killed and left behind. If you tried to escape, you were hunted down and bought back to become an example. If you didn't respond to an order fast enough, you were killed or beaten.
His daughter was kind with all, though she was not as kind as goodbeasts. Slaves were slaves. Anybeast that stood in her way of conquest was enslaved. She rarely killed, but her mercy was not at all as merciful as it should have been.
It took them a full year to reach the fringes of Mossflower. They had come only to conquer.

But evil was coming.
Far from the land of Mossflower, long before the armies of Soretooth and Blackfang left their lands, far from the island of Terromort, far away from Sampetra, the land that was said to be past where the sun sets in the west, far away from the hot lands where bamboo and Firebrand pepper come from, far past even the place that Rockbottoms live, evil was on the move.

Rottooth Deathclaw was looking for conquest. Like the other invaders, it took him a year to get to the far shore of Mossflower. Like Blackfang's daughter, his son was kindhearted but evil. Like the other leaders, he was soft with his army but uncaring with the slaves. His army came on a thousand ships, like Soretooth's army. They had come to Mossflower to coquer and kill. Rottooth's ships landed near Salamandastron and began the attack, Blackfang's army lay seige to Redwall Abbey, Soretooth's followers ravaged the Mossflower land. Woodlander desperately defended their homes, unable to help Redwall. Salamandastron hares fought to protect the shore, unable to help the woodlanders or Redwall. Redwallers countered every attck sent at them, called on hawks from the north, beasts in Southsward from the south, and every other alliance they knew of that was not already fighting, unable to help the woodlanders or fighters in Salamandastron, searching through every record they had for fighting methods, using all their resources and expertise in war (which wasn't much) to repel the attacks.

Evil had come and the Great War had begun.
