Gufftong watched the wildcat approach with a flag of truce in hand. He motioned for the beast to speak and its voice reverbrated through the air. "My lord, Cruelclaw Stripetail, wishes to speak with you. He will appear tomorrow at noon. Do you agree to speak in peace, without violence shed?" Gufftong nodded imperiously. After all, ignoring a wildcat only brought strife, especially one as infamous as Cruelclaw Stripetail.

News of the message spread quickly throughout the slave compound. Other warlords were often greeted by presents, mainly slaves. Who would be chosen to serve this new conquerer?

Only one slave knew why Cruelclaw had come. The squirrelmaid that never uttered a word went pale as soon as she heard who was outside the gates. All friendliness and emotion vanished from her and she sat staring at nothing for hours.
