It seemed like a miracle. Mossyra had been dying, that was certain. Nobeast knew why she was dying or how to save her. They had given her up for dead.
Then, amazingly, she had started to improve. Unknown to the elders, a group of Dibbuns had visited Mossyra and talked to the unconscious squirrelmaid. They had told her that she couldn't die and that they would help her to save her friend. So she got better. I guess it was Dibbun magic.
She smiled and played and didn't mention her past. She was just another Dibbun. Summer flashed by and harvest came. She chose the best strawberries and devoured them before the pickers chased her away, then ate some of the best crops with her friends. They giggled and ran from bathtime, slipping away in the middle of the night to raid the kitchens. It was all good fun.
Then, one day in autumn, she heard about the feast. It was to happen in two days. Excitement rose among the Abbey young ones and not all kitchen-raids were made at night.
And what a night the feast was! Trifles and pasties sat next to fragrant breads and simmering soups across the festive tables. Plum puddings, perfect pies, moist cakes, fabulous flans, and delicious crumbles were side by side with crystalized fruits and candied chestnuts. Everybeast got to stay up late, even Dibbuns, and the entertainment commenced. Songs sung in clear voices, lively dances performed mainly by Dibbuns, and even a funny play acted out by the badgermum and some of the other elders, including the Abbess. None of the little ones objected to going to bed. Just before she yawned herself to sleep, Mossyra thought with satisfaction that her troubles were finally over.

She had thought too soon.

The next day Mossyra was the first one up. She did not know why, but she had a sense of forboding. Trusting her instincts, she packed her belongings in a bundle, then made up a haversack of food. She heard a voice from outside of the main gates and went to see who it was.
What she saw froze her. Cruelclaw Stripetail, her evil foe, was giving directions to some of his troops. "I don't want anybeast harmed," he rasped. "Just disarm and tie them, then search the Abbey for the squirrelmaid. We may take some slaves, but I don't want to hear of a drop of their blood being shed. There may be a badger in there; if there is, knock her unconscious but don't touch her otherwise. Badgers aren't beasts to be messed with. Remember, they won't tell us a thing, much less give us anybeast. If I hear of one of the woodlanders in there being harmed, I will personally kill the beast that causes the injury. Let's go."
Mossyra screamed. She didn't want to see her friends harmed, and it was the only way to alert them. Unfortunately, it also attracted the vermin's attention. Amidst cries of, "There she is" and "Catch her," Mossyra bounded to the east wall and leapt into the nearest tree, zipping away faster than any eye could follow.

Cruelclaw Stripetail stood at the head of his army as they dashed off in pursuit. Nobeast escaped him for long.
