Silverthunder felt the floor rumble. He was deep beneath Salamandastron, in the caves that only he knew. He had been born during a battle in which his father was killed and his mother died soon after he was born. During the seige made by searats, he had found his way down to the dark recesses and lived there ever since, raiding food from the larder when he had to, foraging for food when he ventured out. Now, he knew someone was digging beneath the mountain. That was a problem. He had to warn the Badgerlord, but didn't want to reveal his existance. The floor rumbled again and he came to a decision.
Quickly grabbing some bark, he wrote a note with his left paw. It read:
They are digging beneath the mountain. Keep a watch on the floor of the bottom left side of the mountain.

Satisfied, he slipped upstairs. Two hares hurried by with sacks of food. He continued upward until he was at the forge room, avoiding detection with ease. Then he slipped the note under the door and dashed back to his hidden home.

Rottooth Deathclaw stared at the mountain in anger. His sceme to tunnel under the mountain had ended abruptly when the tunnelers had gone to continue their work and been buried alive by boulders and other rocks that came pouring through the tunnel at two different points; from inside the mountain and from rocks pounding down the slope to fall into the hole that lay way out along the beach. He had no clue as to how they had come by the information.
When night fell, he retreated behind a rocky outcrop nearly a mile upshore. Some of his force stayed to watch the mountain while the rest rested out of range. Just before he could enter his tent, a shout came from the edge of camp. Three soldiers dragged a wildly struggling hare into the firelight, his young eyes glinting angrily. The hare's fur was like any others. Except for on his right paw, where a silver stripe showed.
Rottooth drew his sword and held it to the hare's neck. "Where did you find him?"
One of the three, a ferret, replied, "To the north, lord. He was scavenging for food when we caught him."
Rottoth nodded, then transfered his gaze to the bound hare. We shall see if those on the mountain are as eager to fight when we threaten the lives of one of their own." As Rottooth turned to go he was surprised to hear a voice reply, "I'm not one of their own, vermin." The stoat whirled back around and stared at the captive. "What," he spluttered angrily. The young captive smiled with grim satisfaction. "I'm not one of their own. I'm bally well alone and they don't even know I bloomin' well exist." Rottooth shrugged carelessly. "Then I'll kill you," he said in an unconcerned voice. "Or enslave you." Silverthunder, for it was he, laughed scornfully. "I'd like to see you try!"
