Rosefire regained consciousness in a tent. She had chains around her legs and her hands were tied behind her back. From the sounds all around, she reasoned that she was in the slave tent. With her parents probably dead, herself chained in a tent and waiting to be forced to obey the whim of a tyrant, years of suffering, slavery, pain, loss of friends, and her own eventual death at the hands of vermin when she fell weak and could no longer work, she viewed the situation calmly. If she could get her hands on a weapon, she knew that she could cause much devastion in the ranks of her enemy. Hopefully a sword, but any weapon would do. Maybe a lockpick as well. And some food. Slaves were often starved and she needed to be strong.
Sunsword woke at the sound of the door. He knew what it meant. Soretooth Bloodclaw had decided to pass judgement. Maybe a life or slavery or a long, torturous death. He wasn't sure which was worse.
Instead of vermin coming to drag him out, a dark form was tossed in, with somebeast muttering, "Rotten liddle monster. Near bit my paw off, she did. I hope yew gets made a slave under me. I'll teach yew to bite me, whelp." The door closed loudly, but the crumpled heap did not stir. Sunsword approached curiously. It appeared to be a squirrel in a green tunic, but he couldn't see past all the blood. "Are you all right," he asked. There was no response. He quickly dropped next to the limp figure and wiped away the blood as best he could. Wishing he had some water, the young badger ripped off part of his own clothing and tied her wounds, which consisted of a nasty gash in the head and an arrow hole in her footpaw. A groan came from her lips and her eyes fluttered feebly. "Shh, shh. It's all right. You're okay."
The squirrelmaid's eyes snapped open so fast he fell back with a yelp of fright. Seeming none the worse for the wear, she leapt up and growled an oath under her breath. Then, appearing to notice him for the first time, she started and grinned apologetically. "Sorry. I'm Mossyra. Thank you for helping me, Sunsword Quickpaw." He stared at her for a good ten seconds. Then, recognizing the Slingbeast from his dream, he did something he had never done before. He fainted.
