Chapter 1
The Abbot’s voice rings out clear over the feasting beasts, his whiskers twitching in delight. “As you all know, this is the Nameday feast!” His words are drowned out in a roar of applause from the Abbey beasts, quickly silenced by the Abbot. “Okay now, quiet down. We are here today to celebrate the new season, The Spring of the Strawberry Cordial. Every beast, eat and drink to Redwall that it might stand forever.”
“Here, here!” The Abbey beasts shout, clinking their glasses together, and drinking deep. The merriment was contagious; the beasts were laughing, singing, reciting poems. Quickbow, a small dibbun of 3 seasons, amused everyone by singing a classic song. The beasts, them recognizing the time-honored song of hares, joined him with zeal.
“The Hare!
The Hare!
No they never share!
They will always take a dare!
Saving scoff for them is rare!
Staying by them you cannot bear!
Questing or fighting
Sleeping or dining
The fire mountain is their home
In Salamandastron
Go on, you hare be gone!
To Salamandastron!
The Hare!
The Hare!
The Hare!”
Quickbow hollered the words in traditional dibbun speak, a simple and comical way small beasts talk. Quickbow was a well-liked dibbun, his history slightly mysterious. His parents had never stayed, only dropping him secretly off with the Abbot, not wanting to seem like bad parents. They had told him to just say that he was found at the gates, a helpless orphan, in order to protect him from the stoat.
