Chapter 3
The young squirrel had reached his mother, and stood near her, trying to regain her breath. “Mom, there were vermin there.” He takes a deep breath. “They had swords, and bows, and they killed a bird! Their leader, he looked like a stoat, was huge, and only had one eye!”
The mother thinks for a second, and then quickly speaks. “We must hurry to Redwall, we must warn them! Come, hop through the trees, we aren’t far away from the Abbey now!” The two squirrels dash off through the trees, hurrying to warn the peaceful beasts.
Quickbow was asleep, exhausted from the long feast. He had eaten much more then he should, 3 bowls of woodland salad, almost an entire deeper ‘n ever pie, and put a dent in the Abbot Cake. He didn’t consider the 4 flagons of strawberry cordial he drank as gluttonous, as it was the season’s namesake.
Knock knock knock! Quickbow jumps up, along with most of the Abbey to the loud sound. Knock knock knock! A sleepy brother rubs his eyes resignedly and heads to the Abbey gatehouse, and swings open the gates.
“Who are you, traveler, to wake our Abbey beasts during their sleep?”
The young squirrel hurriedly spilled out his story. “I was out swinging in the trees during the night, when I heard this odd sound. I looked to the ground and there was this mean-looking fox, and he had just killed a sparrow! I didn’t follow him back, but I rushed back to my mother.”
Many of the Abbey beasts had gathered around the young squirrel now, listening intently to his story. “Go on, young one, speak your part.” One elder suggested.
“I went back to my mother, and we headed here to warn you. My mom said that there might be a lot of them, and that we should prepare for the worst.” The squirrel bites his tongue reluctantly, and asks what is on his and his mother’s mind. “Can we stay here? We don’t want to be in woodland with evil beasts, just waiting for us to come down so they can shoot us.”
The Abbot, having reached the squirrels in his nightshirt, answered quickly. “Our Abbey is open to all. You may stay as long as you like.”
“Thank you, kind sir,” cries the mother graciously. “You don’t know how much this means to us.”
“You’re welcome, peaceful beasts. Emrah, come here!” The young squirrel sister jumps to attention. “Take these kind beasts to the dormitories; find them a place to sleep.” The pretty young squirrelmaid nods, and smiles at the two squirrels.
“Follow me, this way.” The squirrels had reached the dorms, and the maid gestured at two open beds. “This is where you will sleep. Enjoy!”
