Voices murmurred through the night
Just a sound, not quite a word
A laugh that shook the very trees
Was the last thing the vermin heard
"I'll meet you back in Redwall," she said
In response to a young squirrelmaid's tears
Treerose was desperate for one scrap of hope
So foolishly she let Rosie's words calm her fears
When their friends were out of sight
Slowly, so slowly, Rosie began to rise
She looked up at her leader with a hardened expression
Stared up into Clary's compassionate eyes
She asked with a smile and a perilous confidence
"Sah, permission to do what I must?"
He nodded and Rosie let out a long laugh
Full of boister and bitterness, longing and lust
"Tarquin'll kill me," she said with chagrin
Thyme looked up from honing his blade
"You don't have to come..." he tried to offer
But she cut him off, "No, fate's plans are made"
So they walked into battle, fearing nobeast
Laughing and joking, doom in their eyes
The captives were freed and vermin were killed
While cries of "Eulalia!" split the dark skies
Many had fallen, yet, too, one of their own
Thyme lay among the vermin he'd slain
Clary and Rose battled the last two survivors
Their fur caked with blood, but they ignored the pain
At last the two fell! but beforethey could cheer
A new fox appeared, an arrow notched on the string
Trained at Rosie's heart, and suddenly it flew
Before she had time to reach for her sling
Time, it slowed down, and all Rosie knew
Was Clary's calm voice, level, but dire
"Rosie, you're young, somebeast loves you at home"
And he stepped in front of the arrow fire
In rage and in greif Rosie grabbed for her sling
Whirled it once, twice, around her head
And before the fox had time to hear her "Eulalia!"
A stone struck his skull, and he fell down, dead
A story of sacrifice, heartache, and freedom
A story in which Rosie would always be part
Her comrades in arms, her friends and companions
Would ever be locked away in her heart
