As the sun beat down upon the open field, two small mice scurried through the grass, their ears perked for the sound of any predator. Even so, the mice could not feel the glare of the hawk watching from above, hidden in the shade of a nearby willow, perched on a branch that wept from age. The hawk's eyes followed the two specks as the mice ran from the shadow of the woods, across the burning sea of grass, and into the other side of the forest. He did not swoop down and attack them for one reason: he knew they were the messengers sent by his father, Huntley, to deliver the report of the war being fought in nearby Stargell.
The war had recently taken a turn in favour of the Stargi, and the word had not yet reached the halls of the hawk's home, Jordann House. Jordann House had not been able to help the Stargi due to a plague that was sweeping the chambers. Already four had died and two dozen more were ill, so supplies were needed greatly. This was in the young hawk's mind as he finally descended the willow and flew one hundred yards to the gate.
The two mice were just being cleared to pass into the House.
"Good afternoon, Harriet", one of the mice greeted. "I have a feeling you might want to hear the good news we bring from Stargell."
"I have already flown over and witnessed the good news myself. May I ask the name of your companion, Casidisis?
"My name is Diryk, old chap. And are you, by any chance, the son of Huntley?" replied the other mouse.
"I am, good sir, and you must be the son of Dilton. I had the pleasure of fighting beside him many seasons ago on the Plains of Princeton." said Harriet. "I hope you two are aware of the sickness that is sweeping our house. It would be safer for you to meet The Keeper outside."
"That's what the gatekeeper suggested. He is just going to get him now", said Casidisis. "Tell me, is anything needed from Stargell to help with this plague?"
The thing we need most", said Harriet, "is news that the war has been won, and the Avi are once again driven back to hell-hole where they belong."
Just then, an old squirrel moved slowly through the gate and motionned for the three to follow him. The squirrel then led the group over to a large boulder positionned in the shade.
"I have just visited the Healing Chamber, Harriet", started the squirrel wearily, "Two more have died, a mole by the name of Lissy, and a squirrelmaid called Eve. Casidisis, please tell me you bring good news from the front, for that is what we need most."
Casidisis gave The Keeper a gentle smile. "Yes, I bring good news from the battle, Keeper Yule. We have pushed the Avi back to the waterfall, and-"
"The waterfall! That is marvellous indeed", interrupted Keeper Yule. "Please, go on."
"Well, we have also had reinforcements arrive from the south, so they are a big help", continued Casidisis. "But enough about the war. Tell us how things are here."
With a sad look at Harriet, Keeper Yule began.
