Title: An Elder's Song
Writing:
I’ve been down
Many a path;
I’ve seen many
A beast full of wrath.
I’ve seen more summers
Than you’d care to know;
I’ve been places
You never will go.
I’ve experienced things
That’ve changed my life;
I’ve had children;
I’ve had a wife.
But though my time
Draws ever near,
I know that I will
Conquer the fear
Of leaving this world-
In short, of death-
Because I know
That with every breath
I simply grow closer
To my reward;
I simply move further
And ever toward
The end of this life;
The beginning of the next;
My final days;
My final rest.
So when I depart,
I’ll go with a smile,
Knowing in my heart
That it was all worth the while.
So do not mourn;
It will be my time.
Just, in your hearts,
Keep my memory alive.
Learn from my mistakes;
Remember my choices.
And then, in the end,
Lift up your voices;
To the Great Forest
Raise a song,
And know that we
Won’t be apart long.
Title: The Warrior’s Heart
Writing:
The warrior’s heart,
Steady and true:
The warrior’s heart--
I see it in you.
I see the reflection
Of others before;
I hear their tales
Resound in your core.
I know that, when faced
With your frailty,
You’ll find the courage
To look past what you see.
You’ll look to the spirits
Of ancients like you,
And find that they
Had weaknesses too.
But the ones that truly mattered,
That changed their times,
Knew that their own strength
Was not of the kind
To be a great hero.
I hope that you see
You must trust in something
That cannot be.
You must trust in something
Much larger than you--
The spirit of freedom,
That guides all you do.
Because only this spirit,
When followed to the end,
Can guide you to victory,
Can make your enemies bend.
For evil is strong--
Yes, stronger than all--
But the spirit of freedom
Will never fall,
As long as there’s
Young hearts in the eve
Who listen to tales
Of those who’ve taken their leave
Of this lonely life,
To the silver shores.
It’s you who’ll carry on,
You who’ll endure.
