A story. (A Few Notes: In all, the Strolling Charmin' Players number 8. LM, Muffle, Poppy, Reila, Rosestripe, Starmist, Maybelle, and Hazel. You'll learn more about them later. All except Muffle -who brandishes a Gullwhacker- have bow'n'arrows of the approprite color. They all have a tunic and matching headband. And they are all the same age, youth. The haremaids are all sisters, as is the squirrelmaids. Oh, yeah, only LM, Poppy, and Muffle are real. The others are just wishful thinking on my part, LOL!)
A young Highlander ottermaid looked up at the sky from her perch on the back seat of a cart. It was a players cart, with a hooded top of assorted colors, and room enough for a large party. There was also a bar for pulling. The ottermaid thought aloud, "What a bonny day!"
A badgermaid of like seasons, wearing a light yellow tunic and headband, turned her huge striped muzzle in the direction of the otter and winked. "Aye, Muffle, but what use is a bright day when we've nought to eat?"
Muffle disagreed. "Nay, Rosestripe, we've- er, hold on a second." The ottermaid clad in a pink tunic and headband dived into the swaying cart and, after a moment, cried triumphently. "Aha! We've six apples, two scones as hard as rocks, and a few shriveled herbs. Maybelle, can ye whip up something wi' these?"
The haremaid whom she had spoken to nodded. Maybelle had on a light green tunic and headband, and a pack slung across her back, next to her quiver of matching green arrows. "Aye, a good stew, if Ah add a few of the berries that grow around 'ere."
"Scoff?" A aqua-dressed haremaid popped out of the cart. "Did somebeast mention scoff, wot?" Poppinjay, or Poppy as she was known to her friends, eagerly dived at a blueberry bush. Stuffing blueberries into her mouth, Poppy remarked airily. "Delicious scoff, wot? 'Course, we'll 'ave better fodder once we get to Redwall."
"Aye," A red-clad haremaid beside her agreed. "An' we'll put on an extry special show for 'em, wot?" Reila indicated the banner flying above the cart. "The Strolling, Charmin' Players!" It read.
"Yah, we'll put on a good show for 'em, but first things first, practice! LM, 'ave you an' Hazel found a place tae do so?" Inquired Muffle.
Two squirrelmaids dropped down from the trees to land beside a startled Muffle. Lady Moss, LM for short, was completely white except for her bushy silver tail. Tied around her head and slightly over her large purple eyes was a strip of purple cloth which matched the tunic she was wearing.
Her companion and sister, Hazel Browntail Naedrey, was a small hazel squirrel, and was clad in a light brown. She nodded excitedly as she chattered. "Yeah! It's a beutiful spot, with a nice lil' stream t'the left, and good oak trees t'the right! Oh, 'tis a perfect clearin' right enough!"
She was cut off by Muffle. "Okay, we'll 'ave tae judge for ourselves afore we kin agree wi' ye, Hazel. Weel you two," Muffle grined and said in her heavily Highlander accented voice, "Ah'm athinkin' that ye two ought tae lead us thae!"
After Rosestripe had pulled the cart to the designated spot, they all stood there admiring it until a haremaid in blue called Starmist poked her head out of the cart. "Well? Are you three just gonna stan' there gawpin', or are you gonna 'elp a poor 'are get these bally preformin' things set up?"
It was a lovely place, exactly as Hazel had described, but they resignedly tore their eyes from it and helped set up the needed equitment whilst Maybelle made a soup. The hares found it difacult to consontrate with food about, and Rosestripe at last said that she would do it herself when Poppy accadentily dropped a heavy wooden pole on Muffle's footpaw. There was much howling from the ottermaid before she leaped up and chased the unfortunete hare around the camp.
Maybelle grined. "C'mon, troupe! I've a splendifferes suppa ready, an' if y'all aren't hungery, I s'pose I could scoff it-" No sooner had she started to speak then they had grabbed their bowls and devoured the soup.
After the meal, Muffle glanced at the darkening sky. "There's nae enough light tae practice now, sae let's do it straight after breakfist, aye?" The suggestion was heartily agreed, and the Players snuggled down around a smoldering fire, sleeping, not knowing what suprises the next day would bring.
END OF PART ONE. Please read the next bit when it comes out! Thank you!!
