U.S. meets strong U.N. resistance



In his address to the Security Council on Friday in New York, chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix cast doubt on Secretary of State Colin Powell's claim that Iraqis have removed banned weapons shortly before inspectors arrived at suspect sites.




Feb. 14 -- NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports that the inspectors’ reports were extremely favorable to Iraq and a blow to U.S. diplomacy.

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 15 — In a dramatic showdown at the United Nations Friday, major powers rebuffed a U.S. push for military action against Iraq, insisting on more time for inspections. Their comments followed a progress report from the U.N.’s top weapons inspectors, who reported disturbing gaps in the information provided by Iraq on its possession of banned weapons, but also questioned U.S. allegations that Iraq is systematically hiding weapons of mass destruction.
