I think what I'm trying to get at is that I *experienced* this particular story as the end point and culmination of years of reading various complaints about Nikita, in part because - especially the opening - it is so vividly written. Also, and as you say, this particular story appeared after the settled consensus that "lfn fandom" had reached (which I obviously don't share) was pretty decisive that Nikita would not be able to run section on her own due to her inherent character flaws and weaknesses (as opposed to inexperience - which either kills you, or doesn't!).

Ah. I think I get you now.

(you once said you'd hate to have Nikita as a subordinate -- Paul would be (and was) equally awful - up to bumping off *his* superior!)

Oh, Paul would be the subordinate from HELL. Seriously. Poor Adrian. And poor George!

What tips the balance for me, though, as I've mentioned before, is that while Paul and Nikita share a good many characteristics, there's something about his evil glee when he defeats/outwits an opponent that I find somehow disarming. He *enjoys* winning, in a way that Nikita doesn't. It's a shame that she doesn't -- but if she did she'd be hard to sell as a mainstream heroine, so there you go.
