Is that I always write the dialogue -- and nothing else -- first. I kind of eavesdrop on the characters and record everything they say, and so I know exactly where they pause. I then fill in the rest of what's happening in the scene, and always try to plug in bits of descriptive prose in places that make sense rhythmically. In fact, when I write out the dialogue the first time, I sometimes insert the word "pause" in brackets as a kind of placeholder so I can preserve the original speech pattern as I imagine it. The "pause" can get filled in with an infinite number of things later.

I have a hard time picturing things, though, and that always takes a concentrated effort. *Much* more of a struggle than hearing them talk.
