as a shallow fangirl myself, I have no arguments on the pretty part (pretty good) - there *might* have been some more interest if Jurgen/Rene had been prettier. I know *I* tend to get more attracted to characters I find physically attractive, especially in media fandom. And if we're writing what turns us on, then pretty is definitely a factor here.

But I disagree that that's all there is to it. I can think of unpretty characters who get ficced (slashed) a lot (Snape, who, for all the greasy hair and yellow teeth happens to be the most compelling character in the 'verse. Rickman has very little to do with it), and pretty characters who don't get ficced at all (Riley). Jurgen lasted three episodes, Rene only one. To make characters work as protagonists, you'd need some backstory, some fleshing out of character - which they don't have. I think, for most fans, they simply weren't compelling enough to actually star in a story.

I think if the LFN fandom were larger and skewed a little younger, we would have Birkoff/Hillinger slash.

Greg isn't a well-loved character, either, so that may have something to do with it too.
