Although I'd throw in another issue. While I agree that it's unlikely Madeline would be promoted to replace Paul (she seemed to be on a completely different type of career track from him -- perhaps parallel instead of directly behind, if that makes sense), I don't believe she would be kept in a post-Paul Section One, except for a transitional period. I think it's much more likely that she'd be moved, either up or sideways, into some sort of position in Oversight/Center or at another Section. Not as a demotion or punishment, but just as a logical next step given that she'd been in the same position for a long time and Paul's death would probably trigger quite a lot of personnel shifting/reassessment.

So if we saw any sort of Madeline/Michael dynamic, I think it would also have the interesting factor of being more indirect -- if she moved up to Oversight, would she be an ally of Section One there, arguing in favor of her former subordinates, and defending her own old turf so to speak? If she went to another Section, perhaps as head of one of the more specialized ones, would she then become a type of rival? Or would she be a potential ally from there, too, taking pro-Section One positions during the committee meetings at Oversight? There are loads of possibilities.
