Heh - yes, of course. Someone wouldn't stick around writing/reading fanfic if they didn't care for the characters of the show/book in the first place. What I was trying to articulate is that while for Nell the plotbunnies seem to be born out of a desire to explore canon (and then the characters; or canon *and* the canon characters), for me it is more out of a desire to explore the characters themselves Ė canon comes second.

Hmm. That still doesn't sound very coherent.
