What I was trying to articulate is that while for Nell the plotbunnies seem to be born out of a desire to explore canon (and then the characters; or canon *and* the canon characters), for me it is more out of a desire to explore the characters themselves – canon comes second.

Actually, I think that's very clear. If it weren't for that distinction, AU stories (same people/different circumstances) wouldn't make much sense. And makes it clearer to me that frequently I'm more interested in the environment of the canon world than I am in the big 6.
