Well, now you've got me wondering.

I admit that Madeline and Paul fell completely out of my story-telling imagination for a while, the end of S4/S5 just pushed them so far from where I started with them that they just stayed out of the stories I was trying to tell - and when they did show up, it was only because I dragged them there against their will and they looked mightly foolish in their new costumes. So, I deleted those bits.

But I have an older AU story, I hope to finish some day, with them as main, secondary characters - but it is set on a military base, so I've replicated the strict hierarchies that way. I think if you drift too far from that type of environment, you will probably loose the dynamics of power that shaped them into the people we saw in canon. Whereas, with Michael and Nikita, their interpersonal issues don't have nearly so much to do with their environment - they are, in some ways, much more primal. Who's up, who's down, who's in charge, who's following orders/suggestions, who's giving them, who's lying and when and why - this dynamic is present in almost all intimate/passionate relationships - regardless of setting. They only crucial element, I think for M/N, is to find an environment/situation where there are still important, and reasonable in that environment, monopolies on information - after that skill of the writer takes over.

Madeline and Paul - I think you could find the same thread outside of a formal hierarchy - but it would have to be another highly restrictive environment, maybe something set mid-twentieth century in the post war corporate world? I could also see them in some kind of 'Whose afraid of Virginia Woolf" academic environment....something were her position is to some degree dependent on his success......hmmmm.
