but it is set on a military base, so I've replicated the strict hierarchies that way. I think if you drift too far from that type of environment, you will probably loose the dynamics of power that shaped them into the people we saw in canon.

Exactly.

Madeline and Paul - I think you could find the same thread outside of a formal hierarchy - but it would have to be another highly restrictive environment, maybe something set mid-twentieth century in the post war corporate world? I could also see them in some kind of 'Whose afraid of Virginia Woolf" academic environment....something were her position is to some degree dependent on his success......hmmmm.

I think it could work in any sort of environment involving hierarchy (formal or otherwise), power struggles, and complex and very dangerous internal politics. I think it works better when the potential cost of losing in the power struggle is more drastic (death, rather than something like job loss).

You could probably place them fairly easily in a royal court with all sorts of duelling factions (Greece or Rome, or Medieval Europe -- like Florence in the time of the de Medicis, for example). You could also invent a similarly high-stakes environment in the future. You could also place them in another kind of contemporary "closed society" via the Mafia/organized crime. I'm sure people can come up with other possibilities.

The main thing is that you would have to choose the environment much more carefully than with Michael and Nikita, and romance should probably *not* be the main focus of the story.
