This is a nice thread pjk - since I'm now officially on the public dollar, and taking advantage of the WI retirement system I think I can respond with some sense of 'qualification' (BTW WRS is SWEET! Who ever hears of being fully vested at the POINT OF HIRE in the public sector. I've worked for non-profits all my PT practice and was only vested after 5 years, and it took 7 to be fully vested at Concordia - who is not a non-profit by the way.)

I will admit, the department I'm in at UWM is very concerned about the public documentation of $ spent-down to the penny. It is something to consider whether those of us on the public dollar benefit from increased federal spending - and to me ventures into economic theory of which I am woefully undereducated.

Seems to me that if you believe federal spending bolsters the economy such that increased tax dollars come in with increased spending going out -then the answer to your question is 'yes'.

If you believe that federal spending does nothing to increase tax dollars coming in - then your answer is 'no'.

If you believe that federal spending increases tax dollars coming in (and believe that this is a good) but differ in how that money is spent (i.e., defense vs. health care as an example) - then I think the answer is 'neutral'.

So, where are you?

I have to say in all honesty I'm going to take the chicken way out and say I don't know (which is why I think you've asked a great question pjk, isn't making us think one point of the VOY?)

On the one hand, I believe federal spending bolsters the economy -- but not sure I'm as happy with how that money is distributed as is under the current practice. That said, I'm of the mind that pork barrel spending needs to decrease and support legislation on the floor that would prohibit spending bills being added without floor discussion and vote. So, what's my point... I'm not sure I have one..... how's that for a change of pace?
