Please don't take this as "defensive", because I wouldn't apologize for a defense contract, only if we cheated on it.But I should probably clarify your facts:

Rockwell International, a huge conglomerate of aerospace, defense contractor (planes and more), semiconductors, truck parts, science center, and aeronautics (Collins - flight control, etc.) purchased Allen-Bradley around 1986 to get more into the commercial sector with ABs automation business. Along the way, Reliance Electric was purchased - they make motors and motor controllers for industry. Reliance was about the same size (revenues) as AB. Since then, and I don't remember the exact years, the aerospace was sold to Boeing, semiconductors was spun off as conexant, meritor was spun off (trucks), Rockwell Collins was spun off, science center mostly divested. Rockwell International, having essentially become AB+Reliance changed the name to Rockwell Automation, and kept the ROK stock symbol. So, although it all happened well before 2003, it must be the year that your source of information stopped reporting the combined spending under ROK. I imagine Rockwell Automation (with Reliance being the majority) gets about the less than $1M dollars reported for 2003 (although that seems way low to me - $1M is not exactly a lot of money - but maybe we just don't sell what they're buying) - I'd like it to be a lot more! I'm sure we sell a lot to the companies that are making what they're buying.

yes and no. no because we could certainly transfer the tax dollars more efficiently if desired, and yes if you believe that more tax money available is going to improve schools (which is an unproven proposition at best).

If the milirary contractors are making profits, then absolutely.

yes.
