i don't know if i ever told you guys that i visited a uranium mine with marie in northern niger in the summer of '87 en route back to europe. when we were in niamey, the capital, & we met a french guy who worked at the mines and invited us to come and stay with him in arlit, a tiny town north of agadez, one of the timeless "major" crosswords for central saharan travelers. when we arrived in arlit we stayed with him and he showed us around the mines, even giving marie a slice of the stone as a souvenir! i'm sure i must of asked about the wisdom of walking around unranium mines but he reassured us that the risks were negligible. i remember the mines as essentially being run and controlled by the french with the nigeriens rubber stamping whatever the west decided or do with it - i assumed it was used to fuel france's many reactors - (there were and probably still are several hundred american soldiers/marines in niger keeping an eye on things over there- kaddafi on the northern border) - plenty of check points and, in light of the reimergence of the importance of the topic these days, no place where america or france would not be in control of tons of yellowcake getting out of the country or calndestinely carried out on camel backs across the great sahara to points east. it's surreal, as are many events that happened during those years, to go back to the mines and look into the future to today, to imagine their small but significant part in the story of an AQ-iraqi sponsored mushroom cloud rising over anywhere usa rationale for a war in the middle east.

yellowcake. i had some yellowish, camel or goat-pee cured toureg cheese in the aïr mountains nearby, the taste of which is still nu-clear to this day.
