a time to rant about the politics of the academy......

my boss (and friend) who i respect and like working for/with was removed from her position as director of the program in her performance review 1 1/2 weeks ago now. her dismissal letter essentially stated that the reason was becuase she had not signed her roll-over contract from last year (I hadn't signed either), and that left the university in an untenable position.

i was offered the interim director position, but never received a contract offer for a week. after meetings with the president today, was told not to sign the interim contract but that leadership transition was a non-negotiable. i argued that if it was going to be a change to allow faculty to provide for a leadership transition over the course of the next year rather than a traumatic transition like the one they had hoped would happen.

my friend has poor communication skills and often offends, yet has the vision of a prophet. our dean, the vp of finance, and the president of the university don't care for the fact that she's a vocal advocate for change - and quite frankly have had enough of dealing with her sometimes crass and offensive e-mails. it took me 6 months to find out how to read her, but once i did it came with deep respect.

boss may leave - if so, not sure what i'll do. we've been putting together a business plan for the last year but cutting the final ties to predictable employment seems really stressful to me. tjm/pa -- how did you do it? I have always admired the risk you took, but perhaps now have gained appreciation of the stress associated with that risk...

boss looking at legal options since her demotion was not likely legal...

trying hard not to make decisions quickly...

k
