What I like about Bush
1. future threat of terrorism on american soil is real and I believe he did his best with what he had at the moment. I am generally in agreement with 'stay the course'
2. I generally prefer less government (see #2 below) - and like the republican message to keep government as local as possible.
3. Rice and Powell.
4. A friendliness to immigrant laborers who do hard work for minimal pay under dismal conditions.
5. A policy of considering first strike military use in order to prevent terror attacks on this soil. I have come reluctantly and with trepidation to this position because I think it requires enormous restraint and is loaded with considerable potential for abuse (by both parties, not just the republicans). However, I think to consider a military as only responding after a strike is antiquated in a global society now fostering easy means to exact great threat by a small few.
6. A focus on small business as a means to success in this country. It appears he has true belief in the innovation and ingenuity of the American people.
7. Desire to show the world the Americans can/are generous people (AIDs treatment funding in particular) - see #8 below.
8. What appears to be a genuine belief in the strength of the democratic process to transform a nation. I believe in this as well. Doesn't mean mistakes are eliminated, but seems to be the best out there at the moment.

What I don't like about Bush
1. Kyoto treaty - although I'm not sure signing was the best idea, I'm disappointed that under his administration he seems to ignore the fact that we are a major contributor to global environmental degredation - if for no other reason than countries not as advanced in polution control now have to 'keep up with us Jonses'. We have opportunity to be a leader here and choose not to be apparently because of the concern on the impact to business.
2. We have bloated federal spending under a 'less government' presidency. If we are at war, and need to spend to fund said war, why not ask the country to share the pain and cut somewhere else? I fear for the debt load my son Tom will carry for these decisions now.
3. Cheney and Rumsfeld
4. no powerful initiatives to get us less dependent on oil - foreign or domestic
5. underfunded 'No Child Left Behind' and continues to underfund IDEA
6. Carl Rove
7. His limited desire to find common ground with the UN (however, balance that with #5 above).
8. An affiliation with very conservative Christian groups with whom I do not completely share an ideology, and whose attempts to moralize behavior without understanding all implications can be a frustration to me.
9. An avoidance of the health care challenge facing the US -

Kerry later....

I reserve the right to add/delete as my indecision resolves.
