Subject: speke now

i would just like to say how dissapointed i am at the way your site is trying to portray speke as it is now.
i grew up in speke and like any other town it has a few boarded up houses.
the pictures that you have for speke now have been blown totally out of context.
most of the pictures are of the same place but taken at different angles.
your website is totally out of order

Lisa...Sometimes it's better to show the bad side of things.
If Liverpool intends to win the City of Culture award then perhaps.....just perhaps, something will be done about these bad areas. Things are slowly happening in Speke and it's this kind of portrayal that eventually gets the ball rolling. The pictures you see on the site have not been doctored in any way and are true pictures. I too grew up on the Speke estate and my roots are there....I also know what it used to be like and what it's like now. Sometimes we have to take the blinkers off to what is going on in the real world.
If we are out of order by showing the world a small portion of the rundown areas of Liverpool, I believe we compensate by also showing the beauty of Liverpool City.
Have you actually walked around the Speke estate and counted how many homes are boarded up....do it... you will be surprised....it's not just a few. There are 4,600 homes in Speke......how many do you think are boarded?
I can tell you that during the time that I grew up on the estate there were zero homes boarded up. Many homes on the estate are well kept by the tenants or owners of long standing. These boarded up homes reduce the property values of the owners who have invested their hard earned cash over a lifetime.....sorry Lisa you are out of order to attempt to coverup something that affects all the families of Speke.

When you look at this post remember that it was posted 10 years ago and Speke was in a terrible state. A lot has happened during that time period and Speke is really starting to shine again. There are lots of new homes built and a whole new shopping centre complete with a modern library. Some of the old pubs have been demolished and some of the old schools have been replaced by modern new schools.

The thing that I am surprised about is that Speke does not yet have a cinema in place. But I am also amazed how Speke seems to be taking a pride in the area once again and that is lovely to see. I live in Canada and travel backwards and forwards across the pond so I notice any of the changes that are made during my absence and it's always nice to see these changes. I would like to see the Crescent shops put back to their former glory and a varied selection of shops located there. This is something for the Council to decide when setting the zoning on these lands. My memories of the Crescent shops were ones of it being a very busy shopping centre and when I look at it now it's a crying shame to see it looking like that. Anyone who lived in Speke during the 50's 60's and early 70's will know what I mean. In any event it's lovely to see it on it's feet again.
