Xpress-OnTM cover for Nokia 3310 and 3330 mobile phones

Hong Kong, 26 March 2002

March 26, 2002 (Hong Kong) - Nokia and Octopus today unveiled a new Xpress-on cover that transforms the Nokia 3310 and 3330 mobile phones into an m-commerce device. Available only in Hong Kong, the specially-designed mobile phone cover integrates a mini Octopus card - a contactless smartcard that contains an electronic purse - that enables users to conduct payment electronically through a secure, convenient and widely-utilitised platform. Nokia is the first company in Asia to integrate a smartcard into a mobile phone.

The Octopus card is one of the most popular electronic payment methods in Hong Kong. As of February 2002, there were more than 8.3 million Octopus cards in circulation with approximately 7 million transactions everyday.

Timo Toikannen, General Manager of Nokia (Hong Kong) Limited, said: "The mobile phone is evolving into the centrepiece of personal life management, enabling complete personal connectivity not only between people, but also for content, services and applications that users require in their everyday life. By integrating an Octopus card into the mobile phone, Nokia is making m-commerce an intuitive element in mobile communications."

Eric Tai, Chief Executive Officer of Octopus Cards Limited, remarked: "Hong Kong is one of the world's most mature markets for the use of smart cards and mobile phones. Combining the two technologies into a single device is a natural move for both Octopus and Nokia to add extra convenience and value to the mass public in Hong Kong."

The new Xpress-On cover for Nokia 3310 and 3330 comprises a full-function adult Octopus card with NO initial stored value and deposit. Customers can use the payment function after adding value to the Octopus card at ticket offices or customer service centres of MTR and KCR, 7 Eleven and Circle K convenience stores, Maxim's fast food and cake shops. Like the normal Octopus card, users can enjoy a maximum negative value of HK$35.

The new cover is available from the Nokia Professional Centres, Nokia's authorised distributors and dealers, as well as mobile network operators in Hong Kong. A 12-month warranty on the product is provided by Nokia.
