Subject: So, how 'bout that there election?

I thought we could start a thread about the upcoming election in November and stuff, I figure it might be interesting and people could learn a little about each other and maybe the presidential candidates themselves, or they could just post and say how much they hate voting or something. Anyway, yeah, just post here. Steve and I talked briefly about the election a couple days ago on IM and I thought it was really fun, so I thought we could extend that into the forum. I have to run to class right now, but I check back later tonight and see what (if anything) people are saying about this topic.

Well, my main opinion on this matter is that if you don't vote for a presidental canidate, then you can't bitch about all the things that the president does when he gets into office. By all means vote, and by doing so exercise the only form of power that we have in government. But also be an informed voter, and don't just vote one way 'casue everyone else is or cause the canidate has a nice smile or something like that.

I might post more latter on the subject, but i have tons of homework that never gets done.

Josh

Yeah, definately vote. If I know anyone who doesn't vote I usually won't listen to their complaints about the government, because they didn't do anything to change it. Here's what I'm looking for in a candidate: (note that I will probably leave something out because this is all off the top of my head before I leave to go to lunch.)

-Not Pro-Abortion (note that anti-abortion isn't neccessary, just as long as the candidate doesn't promote it.)
-Totally Pro-Enviornment
-Not Pro-war
-Anti-Military Spending!
-Pro-Education Spending!
-more later.

I am about the same way. The only problem is the abortion issue you pretty much always get pro-abortion when you have the other veiws. sad really how people who don't want to send people off to war to die want to kill off our own citizens simply because people are too irresponsible to think of the consequences of their action.

(i know that doesn't include the rape issue but that only applies to a miniscule percent of the cases.)

Ralph Nader advocates for a one penny per trade tax on the stock market. If that was ever done it would generate something like 140 Billion annually. (I don't know the exact figure, if you're curious you can check it out at www.votenader.org I think)

While that may be an interesting idea, I think that it would really hurt the markets. Even though it is only a penny, it adds up fast. When investment firms or mutual funds invest in a company, they don't but just one, two, or even a couple hundred. They buy thousands of shares at a time. If this tax were impalamented, the different funds would pass that cost right on to us everyday investor. They wouldn't just increase the price by a penny either. This would end up hurting the average investor a lot in the long run and would hurt the market as a whole. What would happen to the FREE market?
