I can see the Town Managers point of view on what rights they have. That is always a question that is raised in towns that do have Auxiliary Police Departments. I myself volunteered on an Auxiliary Police Force for ten years. Five of those years being a Sgt. and a FTO for the new Auxiliary recruits and the Police Explorer program. Liability is always a hot topic that is discussed, but with the proper guidelines set forth by the town and strongly enforced by the Chief Of Police, the Auxiliary Police Department is indeed something a town can benefit from.

I raised the question because with my experience I saw the benefits for not only the town, but for the individuals that volunteered their time. I strongly feel that if done correctly Dracut could indeed benefit from such a program. Some may read this and say how is that possible. It’s all in knowing how exactly such a program is run, and what the cost are from the town and the individuals that volunteer their time.

If you don’t mind I would love to continue this discussion on the forum and possibly bring some ideas to the table so that the town can really go into depth and consider such a program. Maybe even offer some suggestions of things my unit did to answer any budget questions that may or may not have been raised.

Thank you.

Michael Houston.
