Whether or not a family pays taxes should never factor into the debate about home schooled children participating in the high school activities. When it comes to choosing where to send a child—public school, home school, private school, the Voke or the school choice program—there are advantages and disadvantages in all of them. Parents weigh all the options and make the best choice based on what is right for their child. Home schooled children should be treated no differently than private school children or children in another system because of school choice. If Notre Dame Academy does not have a girls’ volleyball team, is that child allowed to come to Dracut High to play? No. If the Voke does not have a school play, can that student come to Dracut High to participate in a school play? No. It is not the responsibility of Dracut High to provide what the private/home/choice/Voke school is lacking.
If the school committee decides to allow home schooled children to participate in activities, where do they draw the line? Can these students participate in the art shows, NHS, school trips, or graduation activities/ceremonies? Do they qualify for scholarships? If we say they are entitled to participate because their parents pay taxes, does that mean renters' children can be excluded from participating because they don’t pay taxes? Are home schooling parents willing to have this ruling go both ways? If a home schooled group is going on an educational field trip on the route that Lewis and Clark took, and Dracut High is not, is my child allowed to go on this field trip with them because it’s something not offered at her school?
When you choose to participate in a particular school system this may unfortunately mean that your child will miss out on something based on the choice you make. You can’t choose the advantages of all and the disadvantages of none.
