Good question silverfox!

Funny enough, I had a similar conversation with a young man at a convention I went to last weekend.

This is my take on it: Even though many Christians talk of an experience with God one cannot base one's entire faith on this alone. Indeed, as you point out many people of other religions also have definite spiritual experiences. What is needed is 'both' the experience and the reason.

For. e.g. a Christian would value his/her experience with God yet at the same time be able to measure the truthfulness of their faith against such things as their doctrine, geographical data in the Bible, extra biblical historical literature, and Bible prophecies.

To have one without the other is not good. There are some people who focus mostly on the experience. Many Mormons I meet are are like this as they speak about a burning in the bosom and always seem to fall back on this as the be all and end all. Indeed, some Christian groups can be similar as well and do not focus on other factors as much as they should. Then again, there are those who have all the head knowledge but no experience with God. God then seems to become some sort of text book excersise and their spirit is void of fulfilment.

You need both to measure things I think.
