 I'm not super certain but I believe the notion of purgatory coined by the catholic church was derived from the Biblical "Abraham's Bossom". However, when Jesus the Christ ascended into the heavens on the 40th day after He raised from the dead, the cloud was just a description of the people who had been waiting in the bossom. This would mean that purgatory is not available any longer if it ever was. Although the Bible never indicates it ever being available. The closest thing was Abraham's Bossom a resting paradise, but Jesus did away with that. "I rememeber hearing that the basic idea of hell is being without god and not enteral torture etc" - this again is a catholic doctrine, not Scripturaly based. Jesus said it would be a place of gnashing teeth among other things that indicate suffering.
