PART #17
Hollingsworth went back to his office, and made a phone call to Alfonso De Nato. When De Nato answered the phone, he heard Hollingsworth say, “I have a job for you.” The man asked, “What type of job have you got?” Hollingsworth said, “I want you to see what you can find out about a man called Peter Dunkirk. He wanted a large sum of money from me, and I gave him a job to do. He messed up the job. I want to know everything you can find out about him, and bring the information to me as soon as possible. I want to make sure this man does not give us some problems for our operation here in Lake Charles.” De Nato said, “No problem, Boss, I will take care of this matter for you.” Hollingsworth said, “All I want now is information on this man. Don’t do anything until you have talked with me.”

Alfonso De Nato had been a police officer in New Orleans for twenty years. He was dismissed because of his violent behavior. To escape the humiliation at the hands of the New Orleans police department, he quietly left; and settled in Lake Charles. He opened up an office as a Private Investigator, and through that position came to know Hollingsworth Deverall. He had been contacted by Hollingsworth to locate a man for him. He spent seven months trying to find the individual, but Hollingsworth didn’t complain, and kept him well paid. He told him he wanted regular reports which De Nato was faithful in producing. When the man was found, he gave the information to Hollingsworth, who slapped him on the back; and then gave him a fat bonus.

Three days later, De Nato was reading his morning paper, and saw the headlines. The man he had located for Hollingsworth had been found by the local police. Someone had shot him in the back of the head execution style. The strange thing was the man was found lying in his bed. Someone had entered the room while he was sleeping, placed a small gun against the base of his brain, and pulled the trigger.

De Nato knew that Hollingsworth had ordered the hit on the man. Nothing more was said about the matter; and the crime never was solved. Six months later, Hollingsworth came strolling into his office; and said, “I have another job for you to do.” De Nato looked up at Hollingsworth from his desk, and said, “Who do you want me to find this time?” Hollingsworth studied De Nato, thought for a moment, and asked, “How would you like to work for me exclusively?” De Nato said, “It all depends on what is expected of me, and how much you are willing to pay.”

Hollingsworth made De Nato an offer he could not turn down. From that day forward, he was Hollingsworth Deverall’s hit man for. He was given a list of names that day, and each man was to be eliminated. Hollingsworth told him it didn’t matter how he did it. He figured it should be left up to the discretion of the hit man. He would be responsible for protecting himself. Hollingsworth said he would recommend that he try to make the deaths look like accidents, if at all possible. De Nato didn’t ask Hollingsworth why he wanted the men eliminated; he figured if Hollingsworth wanted him to know he would have told him. Each man had known Hollingsworth personally in Pennsylvania, and he was removing them before someone found out where he currently lived, and came after him. Hollingsworth had a terrible fear of someone discovering he was still alive.

After De Nato hung up the phone, he decided to take a shower; and go out. He would see what he could discover about this man Peter Dunkirk. It didn’t take him more then two days to come up with the information for Hollingsworth. He called him on the phone, and told him he had something he might be interested in knowing about their mutual friend. Hollingsworth asked him to meet him at his office following the closing for the evening. When he arrived at the bank, Hollingsworth was waiting, and unlocked the door for him to come inside.

De Nato asked, “Do you know anything about Peter Dunkirk?” Hollingsworth answered, “I do know he is a lawyer.” “Did you realize he had been in jail before?” asked De Nato. “No, that is something I did not know,” said Hollingsworth. “Why was he in jail?” asked Hollingsworth. “He was instrumental in causing the death of Catherine La Faye’s first husband, Joshua Sallier,” responded De Nato.
