PART #18

Jean Baptiste called at the Le Bleu plantation five minutes before the appointed time for his date with Katerina. Catherine went to the door, and invited him into their home. He smiled, and gave her a kiss on the cheek, and told her he had come to call on Katerina. She laughingly responded, “I seem to have heard that from someone today.” “We are going to a Greta Garbo movie in Lake Charles,” remarked Jean Baptiste. Catherine smiled for she knew Katerina loved Greta Garbo. She wondered if Jean Baptiste would care all that much for the movie, but felt he was taking Katerina because she would love it.

Soon Katerina appeared. She was dressed in a two piece dress made of soft cotton that reminded Jean Baptiste of spring flowers. She looked lovely, and he told her so. She blushed with the compliment, but smiled; and thanked him. Catherine was smiling inwardly for she felt each cared for the other more then they wished the other to know. This was going beautifully as far as she, with her matchmaking heart, was concerned.

Catherine looked at Katerina; and said, “I have made some pie you might enjoy when the movie is over. Jean Baptiste said, “That sounds wonderful to me.” He offered his arm to Katerina, and they walked out to his car. While driving into Lake Charles, Jean Baptiste said, “I talked to Boudreau today about asking you out on a date.” “What did he have to say about that?” asked Katerina. He told me that it was up to me to ask, and up to you to make the decision. "That sounds like something my brother would say," she said with a smile.

“You were right Katerina, Boudreau was pretty cranky,” said Jean Baptiste. “He really wanted to go home.” said Katerina, “I fully expect him to be dismissed tomorrow, so that is not too long to wait. He's just getting impatient.”

Boudreau was cranky, even more so that evening than he was during the day. He heard a tap on his door, and a man with a long white coat walked into his room. Boudreau said, “I don’t believe I have seen you before. Who are you? The man smiled; and said, “Your doctor called me in on consultation. I was asked to check your wound, and see how it is healing.” The man pulled the sheet back, and began to check the bandage on Boudreau’s chest. Boudreau felt the man was being extra rough, and was ready to say something to him about being a little more careful when he heard Lucia’s voice.

Lucia walked into the room, and stood at the foot of the bed. She said, “Hello, what is going on in here?” The man turned around, and had a startled expression on his face. Lucia looked at him and said, “Who are you?” The man recognized this was Hollingsworth’s daughter. He said, “I was called in on consultation to look at Boudreau’s wound. I can see it is healing nicely, so I will be on my way.” He pulled the sheets back up over Boudreau, turned around, and left.

After he left the room, Lucia looked at Boudreau; and said, “That was the strangest doctor I have ever seen. Actually, he looked somewhat familiar, but I can’t place where I have seen him before.” Boudreau said, “I sensed something familiar about him too, but I am not quite sure what it was. He certainly did not act too professional. I think I will talk to my doctor about him, and find out his name.”

The man who had checked Boudreau walked down the hall toward a linen closet. He looked both ways to make sure no one was watching him before he walked inside. He removed a hypodermic syringe from his coat, folded the coat neatly, and placed it on a shelf with the linens. Someone would find it, and think someone had left it there by mistake. In a state of frustration, he slowly removed his wig, and makeup. Peter Dunkirk had been foiled once again. He was glad he had not told Hollingsworth of his plan to eliminate Boudreau tonight. Peter folded the wig, placed it in the inside of his shirt, put some horn rimmed glasses on, and walked out of the linen closet down the hall to the front door.

When Peter left the hospital and walked to the parking lot, a man was seated on a bench outside the hospital. He was reading a newspaper, but keeping his eye upon Peter when he walked over to the car. Alfonso wondered what Peter had been doing in the hospital. Perhaps he had managed to kill off young La Faye. He knew one thing, “If Peter didn’t come through pretty soon on getting the job done, it would be turned over to Alfonso, and he would have two men to take care of, the one being Peter. He knew Hollingsworth did not like surprises. He wanted to be made aware of everything that was happening. He would not be pleased to know that Peter had gone to the hospital without telling him.

As he looked around the parking lot, he saw one of Hollingsworth’s cars. That must mean that Lucia was in the hospital visiting Boudreau. What if she had seen Peter? Would she have put it together? Oh, Hollingsworth was not going to like this one bit.

To be continued...
