The Village of Johnsburg, Illinois is proposing an ordinance which
would ban
specific breeds of dogs from within the municipality, including German
Shepherd Dogs, Rottweilers, and American Staffordshires as well as
other
breeds which they deem to be dangerous. While Johnsburg may be a small
municipality, they are located within the Chicago metropolitan area and
it
is very conceivable that, if enacted, such legislation would spread to
other municipalities in the region. Johnsburg does not appear to be
contemplating enacting a "grandfather clause" to allow existing dogs to
remain, because Village trustees have told residents that if they did
not
like the ordinance, they could move to another town. I am extremely
concerned that this ordinance would cause dogs to be dumped or end up
may
McHenry County Animal Control which has a policy of euthanizing these
very
breeds rather than putting them up for adoption.

The AKC believes that such legislation is very dangerous as well. Interested parties may obtain a
legislation
information packet by emailing them at

The residents of Johnsburg, many with GSDs, are very distressed by this
situation and we can help them by sending letters of opposition to the
Village. Fortunately, the legislation has not yet been passed, so we
are in
a situation where we can actually make a difference. The next Village
Board
meeting is April 2, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Hall. Letters can
be
sent to:
>
>Village of Johnsburg
>1515 Channel Beach Drive
>Johnsburg, Illinois 60050
>815-385-6023
>815-385-6054 (Fax)
>Village President: David G. Dominquez
>Village Trustees: Harold May; William Sandell; John Huemann; Richard
Janusz; Rick Quinn; Ed Hettermann
>
Residents have also been sending Letters to the Editor to the Northwest
Herald, which originally covered the story. Letters to the Editor can
be
sent to:
Northwest Herald

7717 S. Route 31
Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014
