The unexpected pain slammed him to his knees. His arms shot out and managed to keep him from falling to his face. The blood trickled and the skin swelling with the breeding of bacteria. Disgusting, he thought. Those hounds needed to be put down. On his knees in front of his son, surrounded by shards of splintered wood from the crate, Zeth glared up.

Had he ever claimed to having hated Briallan? He couldn't recall a time but was sure he'd spat it out in anger once. Or to keep Alicia happy. The truth, though, was that he didn't hate Bri. He hated the games she played. If she had ever just managed to be less....insane?...maybe he would have married her instead. After all, he did remember her being fun.

He reached out and swiped the chain from the floor. "Fine, Lezedi. But in exchange can we agree never to see each others faces again?"
