although it should be expanded beyond just military service. I think that every American (or any other nation for that matter) should have to spend two years of their life doing public service. That could be the military, the Peace Corp, Americorp, the Red Cross, crossing guard, whatever. This would entail leaving home. Undergoing extensive training culminating in serving the public in the capacity of their training.

That's the problem in America today. Everybody is spoiled rotten. They sit around and watch crap like the "Anna Nichole Smith Show", spend all their money getting drunk or stoned, and play the lottery. Even if someone is motivated in life and applies themself to their career, school, or what have you, far too many of us lack a basic appreciation of what our freedom really means. Just look at all those Koreans and Indians coming over here and running successful businesses in places that regular Americans wouldn't consider trying to make a buck. Those folks see opportunities where we just see risks and threats. Hell our risks and threats are their opportunities!

I was involved a while back in a local church's Bolivian mission. It was an eye opening experience. The church sent two teams a year into central Bolivia. One team did site prep work. The other team were local doctors and nurses. They went down there and provided free medical care to anyone who wanted it. The religious angle was de-emphasized. Bolivians didn't have to convert to get medical attention. After a few years I guess word got around about this annual effort. Stories of people walking a hundred miles across the mountains of Bolivia just to see a doctor where common. They were primarily sending dentists and OB/GYN's. These people had lived out their lives never having been seen by a doctor. My involvement really opened my eyes to just how well off I am here in the states. If one of my kids gets sick we're on the horn right away with their doctor's 24-hour help line (my kids have their own pediatrician). A registered nurse calls you back in about ten minutes and tells you what to do, or sends you to the emergency room, or whatever. Most people in the world don't have any options like that to choose from. If you get hurt or sick you suffer and either live through it or die.

Most Americans are badly in need of an eye opener.
