It has to do with genetics, or a misunderstanding of it.

I'm not sure how closely you are related to your cousin (in a generic and genetic sense), but obviously marrying into your family results in a smaller gene pool which is normally not a good thing. Our culture frowns on that...

I would not marry my cousin, no matter what, but then I'm a product of a different culture than you.
