well, you have to understand that america learns about little slices of foreign life whenever we liberate somebody.
for instance, we now know where iraq is on a globe.
a couple times a week, somebody in the media will latch on to some bit of info, and pretty soon it's being chanted like a mantra --- after all, there're only so many bits of information, and there're a lot of channels trying to fill 24 hr coverage.
last week(?), we(I) learned about the greatest insult known to the arab world --- hitting somebody's statue in the face w/your shoe.

I was reminded of this by some of the quotes off that site:

"We will welcome them with bullets and shoes."


"The shock has backfired on them. They are shocked because of what they have seen. No one received them with roses. They were received with bombs, shoes and bullets. Now, the game has been exposed. Awe will backfire on them. This is the boa snake. We will extend it further and cut it the appropriate way."

About Bush and Rumsfeld: "Those only deserve to be hit with shoes."


this is the 21st century --- I don't think shoes are going to cut it as a weapon much longer.
or maybe this is what he intended as unconventional warfare, and we just misread it as a threat to use wmd's:

"Tonight, we will do something unconventional against them. This means: not by the military. We will do something that I believe will become a pretty example for those mercenaries. I would not be giving out a secret when I say that action in the dark against such mercenaries is effective, not through the action of armies."
