Actually the first time I met him I couldn't beat him. I tried the fight several times and just couldn't manage to bring him down before he smoked all of my party (or most of my party). Rather than to keep banging my head against the wall I beat a hasty retreat and left his dungeon to do a few other quests (at that point in the game you get peppered with so damn many quests it's hard to keep it all straight). After a quest or two I had bumped my party up a few levels (close to 12th). I decided to go back and take another shot at Firkraag. I again used the same tactics, but this time my tanks were a bit tougher. I kept all of my weaker characters spread out at the extreme points of his lair (I did this before he went hostile on me). That way my summoned creatures (which I also took the trouble to summon prior to him going ballistic) could stand in the front lines surrounding him along with my tanks. The tanks would muddle in and try to deal Firkraag damage as my magic users used spells on him (weakening spells, Doom, curse, good old magic missle, etc.). My cleric would try to keep my seriously wounded guys alive (along with them imbibing potions) and everyone would try to avoid the fire breath and the wing buffets (the aspect about him that seemed to trouble me the worst). At that point I was able to bring him down, but it was still a good fight and I had to still do a couple of reloads.
